This is definitely my favorite time of year. I even loved it when I was a student. The excitement of back-to-school supplies and clothing and the plethora of weekend and evening events always made my heart sing.

This year I have registered for two Adult Night School classes: Fossil Collecting and Yoga. The fossil thing is long overdue. I've been riding around with fossils on the floor of the backseat of my car for over 5 years now. (How many people do you know who have a fossil outcrop with them at all times?) Last night I learned that my collection is made up of coral, shells and plant life from the Devonian Period. That's something like 350 million years ago! I can't wait to learn about local sites to visit to collect more. A life-long dream is to find an American Indian arrowhead. Maybe this class will get me a step or two closer to that.

The yoga class is something I have taken before because it feesl good and because I have no self-discipline when it comes to exercise. It's amazing that I gladly create/invent/write every day, yet the practice never extends to anything physically healthy. Now that I have been diagnosed with computer mouse elbow (aka tennis elbow -but I already told you that it's impossible for me to have a sports injury!) as well as bone spurs and degenerative arthritis in my cervical spine, it's a necessity. I hope it helps because the chiropractor couldn't.

(A NOTE TO ANYONE WHO HAS SENT ME AN EMAIL IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS - THE DISCOMFORT OF SITTING AT AND TYPING AT THE COMPUTER IS WHAT HAS KEPT ME FROM RESPONDING. SORRY!)

On the good news side of things, I have been happily inventing a game called Fast Fifteen as well as a new creative writing kit. I so love being in creative mode. It's like being in paradise! If you've never been there, it's really easy to get a ticket. Simply follow your passions, and all the doors magically open for you! Check out the Appearances page on my website, to see where I will be this fall so you can come meet me... and at the same time, give your creative side a nice spark. I hope to see you!
-Bonnie

A Summer in the Life of an Inventor/Author/Teleconsultant

It's hard to believe August is less than a day away. When I was a kid, unlike all others I knew, I used to get very excited when I saw school supplies in the store. I wasn't big on going to the swimclub on a daily basis from the moment school let out until Labor Day (minus a week for an excellent family car trip). Maybe it was my fair and easily sun-burned skin that made me hate the heat and humidity. Or maybe it was the chronic swimmer's ear that I got every year that made me not like swimming. But I think it was the never-endingness of nothing planned that was what really caused me the most discomfort. School supplies meant the imminent return to structure, organized activities, learning, and planned socializing.

But there were good summer days... Like my birthday where I went out with my grandmother. Or the days when it was too rainy or too cool to go to the swimclub. When I suspected it was going to be one of those days, immediately upon waking, I'd check the temperature and, if I was right, and the 3H Gods (hazy, hot, humid) were giving me a reprieve, I'd grab the phone and start calling the movie theaters (I memorized the numbers) to see what was playing and when. If that wasn't a good choice, there was always a shopping expedition that could be fun, or a day of Monopoly and other games played (perhaps in my 'ever-the-optimist' choice of long-sleeved clothing instead of a bathing suit) in a nice air conditioned living room.

Even though I have been out of school for decades, and I don't spend summers at a swimclub, I still get a thrill on August 1st knowing that Fall and night school and pumpkins and many more cool weekend and evening activities are now less than eight weeks away. The other good news is that, as an adult, I have structed my life so that I don't have days of endless nothingness facing me. (So, unless you want to see my annoying side, don't don't invite me to a beach vacataion.)

A typical day in my life involves early morning snooze-button hitting where my husband and I alternate turns, a cat or two walking on top of us in bed meowing about food, checking email before my shower, feeding cats, eating oatmeal and soymilk (yes, every single day), back to the computer to work on my latest invention or book, going to a consulting job from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm, calling my husband to bug him about evening plans, feeding cats, another hour or two on my current project, ignoring all the accumulating emails that I just can't seem to return because they aren't aprt of my current project(s), having dinner, playing a newly-purchased game (currently by Cheapass Games) or going to a bookstore or a free lecture, annoying my husband about his need to watch TV, checking email, getting into bed with a book (fiction or puzzles) and falling asleep with the light on.

WHAT YOU JUST READ IS, believe it or not, MY DEFINITION OF STRUCTURE!! To the untrained eye it would look like I am free-flowing from one thing to the next. But believe me, this lifestyle feels too darned good to be swimclub-like in any way, shape, or form!

Here's to Fall Year-round.

A Long Two Months

It's hard to believe that two months have gone by since my last post. Here are the updates:

The tour was fantastic! Gil (my husband) and Booger and Coolio (our cats) hit the road in an RV we rented from Cruise America. For three weeks, we went from one Branes & Noble to the next, giving free writing workshops and promoting Write-Brain Workbook. I met so many wonderful and talented writers and aspiring writers. If I had the money, I'd go back on the road again tomorrow.

Upon return from the tour we had a couple stressful weeks preparing for Gil's hearing as well as the actual week of the trial. For those of you who are out of the loop, suffice it to say he was wrongly accused of speaking words he never uttered to a township inspector. The jury found him not guilty (duh!) of one count and the judge found him not guilty of the other. Thank goodness that's over!!

Immediately after the trial (well, a couple days) Gil came down with some sort of upper respiratory/sinus thing. I thought I was immune, but the day before I was supposed to leave for Washington DC to present at The Writer's Digest Writer's Conference and attend BEA, I woke up with a nasty sore throat coupled with difficulty catching my breath. A visit to the doctor resulted in a diagnosis of bronchitis with aggravated asthma and a nice does of antibiotics. And that was the last I saw the light of day. I spent the next four days in bed trying to sleep, trying to breathe, and trying to forget that I was missing the trip to DC and BEA. After a brief reprieve over a weekend, I was back at the doctor's and being sent for a chest x-ray. It took two weeks to recover. I still don't have my voice back 100%, but 85% feels like a dream!

And now we're up to the present. I am doing my best to earn some money and catch up with all the work I missed.

Over the Memorial Day weekend (which was rather quiet in our house) I completed the first version of a new word puzzle that I am tentatively calling Cloud 9x9. I need to make a few prototypes to give out to folks for play-testing. It's amazing how many hours on end I can spend fine-tuning a game and testing and retesting all its nuances. But if you put a two-hour movie on the DVD player, I will lose interest in 10 minutes and fall asleep within 15.

Next on my agenda is to get a couple book proposals to my agent. The ones on my desk need some updating and an extra something. I need to spend a bit of time with them to figure that out. There is a Henny Youngman quote I like that sums it up: "Triumph is just oomph added to try." It's time for me try some new ideas.

And that's all she wrote!

Off The Beaten Path

Last night was the last of the local (to me) free workshops to promote my book. The event in Wilmington, DE was the perfect way to bring them to a close. Why? Because a dear friend (known fondly as Edgar Allen Pat) surprised me by attending. He had been a willing guinea pig and avid supporter of my workshops when I was developing the exercises that are now in Write-Brain Workbook. It was great to see him.

Now I am reading travel books in the Off The Beaten Path Series for all the states I will be visiting during the northeast corridor portion of the free creative writing workshop tour. If you know any places that are free, odd, interesting, and intriguing in North Jersey, Hudson Valley NY, South CT, Central MA, Southern NH, Warwick RI, please send along suggestions! Then I ask those in charge of the specifics, #1, What objections are you getting? and #2, Which selling points are exciting clients? For each objection, I list responses to overcome them. #2 indicates the hook I might use to start the call.

"Then I write a script and read it aloud until it sounds totally natural. On a separate sheet of paper, I write the key words from each paragraph one per line, in the order I'll present them. At the very bottom in big print is the goal of each call. Finally I crumple up the script and toss it out.

"I place all the supporting literature, including objection lists and vocabulary words, around my desk, sit with good posture and smile. It's been way too long since I've posted. I've really been enjoying the promotion part of the publication (thank goodness, because it is all-consuming) of Write-Brain Workbook, 366 Exercises to Liberate Your Writing. Here are some of the highlights:

1. The official book tour of free writing workshops began on Weds. Jan 18th with a nice bunch at the Barnes & Noble in Marlton, NJ. My prop that I made of a brain with pens sticking out of it (a write brain!) was a just what I needed to set the mood and jump-start the tour.

2. The second day of the tour (Thurs. Jan 19th) was at the Barnes & Noble in Exton, PA where I presented to a great group of teachers. They got credit, I got to share the fact that when I was a student I hated to write, and we all did some writing and sharing about the discipline behind disciplines. The wind-up brain that I bought off the internet was such a big hit with the librarian who organized the event, that I let her take it back to school.

3. THE BOOK LAUNCH PARTY ON FRIDAY EVENING, JANUARY 20th at the Barnes & Noble in Bryn Mawr was fantastic. There was a standing-room-only crowd of at least 120 and we sold out of books. My Mom flew up from Florida for the big event and even invited old neighbors from my childhood (Mah Jongg ladies) who I hadn't seen in decades. What a blast it was, from my earrings that Gil (my husband for the uninitiated) made with replicas of the book cover to the scrumptious food provided by Whole Foods Markets in Wynnewood to a word game demo of Jot! by inventor Dan Cooney. My favorite part was definitely when everyone lined up to buy books.

4. The next free writing workshop was at the Barnes & Noble in Wilkes Barre, PA (Jan 24) where we were so engrossed in writing that no one noticed the blizzard-like weather that had appeared out of nowhere. The ride home was hairy with only one lane on the northeast extension of the PA turnpike, trucks travelling at 20 mph with flashers on, and all the signs covered with snow. I ate a whole bag of sugar-free cookies from nerves while driving. A very late-night, 1.5 hour stop at a rest area while the roads were salted and plowed was a great idea because the balance of the ride home was nice and smooth.

5. Gil accompanied me to the workshop at Barnes & Noble in Deptford, NJ on January 26th. Beforehand, we had dinner at a diner where we played backgammon. I can't seem to recall who won, but that unto itself hints to the fact that it probably wasn't me! The writers in this store were really enthusiastic. And the person who won the Story Spinner (I have a drawing for one at each workshop) was someone who was in the store and happened to walk by when the workshop was half over. She found it so interesting and engaging that she grabbed a seat and stayed until the end.

6. On January 30th I was interviewed for Comcast Tonight, a show out of Reading, PA that was rebroadcast all week to promote upcoming workshops in Lancaster (Feb 7) and Allentown (Feb 18). They are supposed to mail me a VHS of the show. I am heavier than ever and I know that TV adds 10 pounds, so I am a bit hesitant to watch the tape when it arrives. I wore my tutleneck with the wind-up brain on it (god bless ink jet printers and iron on transfers and having a husband with the patience to cut and iron!) which isn't the most flattering of tops, too! Enough whining.... The ride up was in pea soup thick fog. Everytime I had to make a turn I had to drive under the street sign in order to see it. If it was a left turn, I had to go through the intersection and then make a u-turn. It was the only way. Perhaps this was some sort of foreshadowing??

SURE HOPE YOU CAN JOIN ME AT AN UPCOMING WORKSHOP!!The next post will have all the dates and times.

Book Signings are Over, Workshops are About to Begin

December has flown by. I really enjoyed all the signings I did at many Barnes & Noble stores in the greater Philadelphia area. I met some wonderfully nice writers and aspiring writers. I was pleased to have the time to speak with many of them one-on-one for a nice bit of time. I also ran into a couple old friends who just happened to be in the stores while I was signing. That was a blast! The free writing workshops at Barnes & Noble stores will start on January 18th. Check out the Appearances page on www.BonnieNeubauer.com for a complete schedule. I look forward to meeting you and writing with you. Write-Brain Workbook was prominently positioned on the shelves in all the stores. Are you ready for a confession? It was much more exciting and fun to call stores every day, awaiting the arrival, than it was to actually see it on the shelves. It was as if my mind's eye had so clearly envisioned the books on the bookstore shelves, that when I saw it in reality, it was as if I had already seen it a million times over. I must give credit where credit is due for the art of visualization. And also acknowledge the truth of my personality. I I really enjoy being in the land of anticipation. No wonder I have so much anxiety! The next visualization I have is of you, in the bookstore, walking to the writing/reference section, taking Write-Brain Workbook off the shelf, admiring it, getting motivated to write, buying the book with you hard-earned cash, and going home to write, write, write. Thank you for making this vision a reality! Write-Brain Workbook is also a wonderful holiday gift for all the creative people in your life.

Write-Brain Workbook ON A BOOKSTORE SHELF!!

After days and days of obsessive calling to various and sundry Borders and Barnes & Noble Bookstores....
And making a conscious choice to call out-of-state stores rather than have to change my voice...
This morning I discovered that the very first copy of Write-Brain Workbook to arrive in a bookstore in the greater Philadelphia area was at an Independent Bookseller called The Chester County Book & Music Company!!

This evening Gil (my husband) and I took a ride to see it. When we arrived at the store, Gil asked the bookseller for the book, and we were told that it was still in receiving and not yet on the shelf. After a bit of cajoling and explaining that his wife wrote the book and that I had dragged him away from work (or TV, which is how I would have told the story) to come see it, the guy went into the storage room and found it. He placed it on the shelf and only then did Gil allow me anywhere near the aisle. It took me a minute (or two) to spot it on the very bottom shelf. But when I did, I grabbed for it as a huge smile overcame me. Gil captured the smile on film. Here it is:

At Gil's suggestion, I left a special note inside the book. I hope the writer who buys it gets in touch!

Thank you for reading and indulging me and my joy over living a dream-come-true.

See pictures of pages from Write-Brain Workbook on Amazon.com

Write-Brain Workbook is in the bookstore warehouses and will be on the shelf any day now. It's located at 400 South State Road in the Marple Crossroads Shopping Center. As soon as you go down the escalator, look to your right. And there you will see a store within a store called Artisans 'N More. Stroll almost all the way to the back and, on the left-hand side, you will find a booth title Mixed Media Collective. On the shelves, along with great creative works by some of my amazingly talented friends, you will find some of my creations for sale. We're not allowed to stock the shelves until November 16th. But once we do, you will be able to buy Story Spinners and the last of the Wild Hair Girls. For those of you who are not in the know, Wild hair Girls are pins made of beads, wire, buttons, charms and other found objects. Each "girl" has a name and a distinct personality. I used to make them all the time. But now my efforts are focused on my book tour. So this is the last of the lot. I thank my friend Edna at Tyme Gallery in Havertown for babysitting them until I found a new place to sell them. Artisans 'N More is overflowing with the products of local craftspeople. Definitely check it out. The phone number to the Jo-Ann Superstore, if you need directions, is 610-544-6248. Our pilot, John Kassab is the owner of Bailey Printing in Media, PA by day. He donated the flight to a local non-profit called PathWaysPA. And Ellen won it as part of a silent auction.

If you look closely at the above photo, you will see that I am actually steering the plane! Totally cool. Now it looks like it will be on shelves before Thanksgiving. This is great news. If there are creative people on your holiday list, please think about giving them Write-Brain Workbook this year. The book offers 366 fun, playful, game-like creative writing exercises plus another 366 exercises that explore the creative process and writing practice. The design elements jump off the page making writing something that is tempting and inviting rather than dreaded and scary. Go to http://www.bonnieneubauer.com/writebrain.shtml and then click on the Amazon link in the left column to go straight to the book page for quick at-home ordering. The title is From Book to Bestseller and the author is Penny Sensevieri. Here is the entire review. If you want to skip the review and go right to the source, head on over to www.amarketingexpert.com.

On Friday morning I met Penny Sensevieri at a publishing conference. I was in awe of her presentation in which she delivered, with laser-like ability and agility, the most complete and comprehensive book marketing and p.r. overview I have ever heard.

On Saturday afternoon, Penny saved me from a public speaking disaster by allowing me to run my PowerPoint presentation on her beautiful new laptop computer.

On Sunday morning, I bought a copy of her book From Book to Bestseller. After hearing Penny give numerous energetic, entertaining, and content-heavy presentations over the weekend, it was clear to me that, as an author, it was the only solution other than bringing her home with me. Penny has her finger on the pulse of publicizing and marketing books whether you are a self-published author, as was the case at the conference we were attending, or a traditionally published author, as is my situation with a book coming out in a couple months.

On Monday morning, to keep up the momentum of the conference, I grabbed my favorite green hi-liter and, while eating my breakfast, began to devour Penny's book. It is chock-full of easily digested (hey, I was eating while I read it) chapters covering every imaginable facet of book marketing. Penny makes it all very palatable and holds your hand while telling you what to do as well as how (with very specific step-by-step examples) to do it. It was like I had brought Penny home with me! When I left for work, I was on page 30 and was excited to know that Penny would be joining me for breakfast for at least the next week or so.

On Monday evening I met up with a fellow-writer (and friend whose website is www.all-about-sweet-potatoes.com) for our monthly review/set creative goals meeting. We also discuss current creative challenges and brainstorm solutions. One of her challenges was how to send out bulk press releases without doing it one-by-one. I didn't have the answer.

On Tuesday morning I had breakfast with Penny (and my green hi-liter) again. I actually got up a bit earlier so I would have more time to read. Lo and behold, on page 63 of From Book to Bestseller, I found the answer to my friend's challenge: A list of websites that allow you to post free press releases. I couldn't believe my eyes! I ran upstairs to my computer and dashed off a quick email. The subject was, 'Ask and Ye Shall Receive.' And I sent her all the links from the book. Then I returned to my cold oatmeal.

On Wednesday morning I picked up Penny's book, smiled at it, as I said out loud, "Seek and Ye Shall Find." The true secret to success in all areas of life is to know where to find answers to questions. Knowing Penny and having her book immediately available are definitely two resources that will make me a more successful author.

Any author who is looking to promote more books needs to add Penny's book to their library, her website to their bookmarks, and attend a conference where they can meet her in person. That's a lot of benefit for just one Penny!

Infinity Publishing Conference and SimplyFun to License My Game!

Oct 3, 2005: I just spent a wonderful weekend at 6th Annual Infinity Publishing Express Yourself Conference. I had a lot of fun giving my first-ever PowerPoint Keynote speech. Infinity Publishing is a print-on-demand publisher based in Conshohocken, PA and they are dedicated to helping their authors succeed. I met a whole slew of wonderfully accomplished self-published authors and a dynamite panel of presenters committed to helping authors market and promote themselves. If you didn't attend the conference, here are links to the websites of the presenters where you can get a taste of their expertise:
Penny C. It will include a deck and somewhere between 5-10 solitaire games that can be played with the cards. There are 30 games in all and they will probably publsih additional games in the future. This is a great company that sells its games through house parties. Solidare has a launch date of April 2005. Stay tuned for more details.

Testing... 1,2,3
